Ari Venezia-Zahemski is President and co-owner of Vanguard Energy Services. She is truly passionate about reducing your energy demand, and equally as fired up about getting you the absolute best rates on your supply. After spending over a decade in the Property Management field, she is super excited about being able to give business and property owners a way to finally take control of their Utility costs. If you ask Ari, she’ll tell you “the best part of her job is teaching people how to get rebates and credits back from government and utility agencies; and the most rewarding part is that while saving all this money for our clients, we are participating in saving our planet - one kilowatt at a time."
Take an inside look at what an LED Lighting Upgrade really means in terms of Energy Savings, Operational Cost Savings, Return on Investment and Initial Investment. Find out how you can be CASH POSITIVE from day one with no hidden tricks or balloon payments.
It sounds to good to be true. We know. That’s why we’re sharing this LED Lighting Upgrade Project Prospectus with you. From a real customer. Who is, by the way, still a customer that we are currently doing more work with. Just in case you were wondering.
You probably are – wondering, that is. I mean, there is so much information and disinformation available about Energy Conservation, LED Lighting and all the things related to utility cost reduction.
I was actually at a trade show last week, where an attendee told me that his facility converted to CFLs (that’s Compact Fluorescent bulbs for the uninitiated ) the curly bulbs that take time to warm up, have universally inefficient and insufficient light that is also recognized as just plain ugly. Additionally, there is no safe way to dispose of them, and if you break one you need to open the windows and shut the door of the room where it happened, and EVACUATE FOR 24 HOURS. Did I mention this was a Senior Living show?
So presumably, some unscrupulous character encouraged this well-meaning, cost-conscious Senior Living Exec to “upgrade” from old school fluorescent lights, to compact fluorescent lights, when I know – and you may know- that LED’s were not only available, but that the rebates were even better than they are now, and that the EPact Tax Credits were in full swing. Did I mention this was a non-profit Senior Living Show? I know, its horrible.
So, what happened? I’m not sure…..but I’m thinking two things.
The person who was doing the buying is a really busy person tasked with procuring a zillion different things at the best price and efficacy available. And they have to be there yesterday. One cannot be an expert on every type of item that a facility might need. Therefore, they simply don’t have the bandwidth to learn every new technology in ever area. Long story short, lack of information. This leads to buying decisions that are heavily influenced by the seller, and the price tag. Regardless of the long term ramifications.
The person doing the selling was either:
Not an expert in his/her field, and not aware of all of the options, their benefits and advantages, the rebates and tax credits that would have made LED not only a better choice, and a healthier choice, but ultimately a more cost effective one as well. They were also uninformed. Which is kind of like going to a Dentist for a Brain Tumor.
Someone who sells products, light bulbs as it were- and not Utility Cost Reduction Solutions. People who sell products care about sales. People who provide, and yes, sell solutions care about providing a remedy to a particular situation that is causing “pain” of some kind. In our case, we provide the remedy for high utility costs, and with it the added benefit of doing something great for the environment as well.
At Vanguard Energy Services- We Sell Solutions. We have an educational process where we first answer all your questions about who we are, what we do, and what the difference is between LED Lighting Upgrades and retrofits;luminaries and fixtures. We tell you how much you are going to save. We offer you different ways to finance. We will explain the difference between a local rebate, and a tax credit, and best of all- we’ll do all the paper work and tell you where to sign (3 places) and when to expect your money.
What we won’t do is sell you something you don’t need. Or give you the quick and cheap fix, in order to get paid fast, without considering your needs or what your plans are in the future. LED Lighting Upgrades are not about spending money getting a quick return, they are about using less energy, hour after hour, day after day- for years to come. The LED Lighting Upgrade is the beginning of the process, not the end.
Utility Cost Reduction-Simplified means WE SIMPLIFY IT FOR YOU.
In addition to LED Lighting Upgrades we offer these additional Utility Cost Reduction Solutions
Lighting Controls and Automation
Operational Management Systems
Reduced Utility Rates

What would you do for your business with an extra $50,000 a year?
Vanguard Energy Services is going to help you find out. The right way.
This article by Eventbrite illustrates how millennials, America’s largest generation by population, are soon to enter their
earning prime. With a majority of this generation now in the workforce, they currently
command an estimated $1.3 trillion in annual consumer spending. Where will this
generation direct their wallets?
I’ve discussed in previous posts the numerous ways LED lighting helps businesses to save money by cutting energy demand, reducing maintenance cost, and of course, they last so long it seems impossible. 50,000 hours. 80,000 hours. 180,000 hours. But these luminaires and fixtures are DLC listed. That means that an independent lab has certified the claims of the manufacturer to be true. They have warranties as long as 10 years. That means that if they fail prior to the 10 year mark, you get a new one – free of charge- through your manufacturer’s representative- as long as failure is based on regular use; not the aftermath of hooking up a flux capacitor or some other crazy thing.
The world has changed tremendously since 1985 and Marty McFly. The excesses of the Baby Boomers, and their kids- GenXers like me we wanted- big houses, big cars, big, huge televisions have given way to the Millennials- born 1980-1996- who are now the world’s largest consumer group spending an estimated $1.3 trillion this year alone in the consumer market. But they are not spending it on things. They are spending it on experiences. In fact, according to a report released by Eventbrite, 78% (that’s 3 out of 4) millennials surveyed would spend money on an experience rather than on a one time item purchase. And they would spend more money on it.
If you manage or own residential or commercial property- a hotel, a music venue, a store, a club, a gym, a coffee shop, a restaurant, even an office building, or workspace-you can bet that how it “feels”, that je ne sais quoi, that transforms a place from bricks and mortar to a place that people want to be is the most important characteristic your property has to the millennial decision maker. Four walls, a ceiling and a floor are no longer sufficient. The elements that create that feeling, the ambiance of a space are design elements. The same tired old space with carpets and fluorescent lights can be totally rejuvenated by design grade LED lighting and some hardwood flooring.
The drive to have meaningful and memorable experiences pervades every fiber of the millennial culture. They want live music, they want exotic flavors, they want natural light, and open floor plans. They want organic and green and environmentally conscious. From a business perspective, getting in front of the demand for the largest group of top earners in the country only makes sense. Why not make your facility “millennial friendly”. Switch all your properties to LED lighting via the retrofit programs available today, or choose architectural styles that have that retro look that looks vintage, but is cutting edge LED technology. Put a sign on your door that says “this facility is 100% Environmentally Friendly”. Make LED part of your LEED certification plan. Let the amazing colors, unique shapes and flexible capabilities of energy saving, money saving, environmentally friendly LED turn your property into a millennial magnet.
There are numerous studies available about the effects of how LED Lighting affects mood and health. Check out our website www.vanguardenergynj.com to read a few. If you don’t believe me about the millennials, that report is on our website too. It’s called “Millennials- Fueling the Experience Economy”
Whatever the reason, there’s never been a better time to enhance your Real Estate Asset by upgrading your lighting to LED.
Now, how do the millennials say later- oh yeah…Peace Out.
New Jersey Business Magazine article – February 15, 2016
The least expensive change a business can make to save energy costs is to its lighting. It can account for as much as 30 percent of a facility’s electric expenses “and can be reduced by 60 to 80 percent simply by switching to LED technology,” says Ari Venezia-Zahemski, president/chief financial officer at Vanguard Energy Services, LLC in Randolph.
Incandescent and compact fluorescent bulbs emit light and heat in all directions, but LEDs emit light in a specific direction, which is why they use light and energy more efficiently, according to the US Energy Star program.
When we are shopping for a particular item for our personal use, such as a car or major appliance, we will often choose a brand and store/supplier we have had good customer experience with, we trust and may deem as being the leader in their space. We believe this thought process should also carry over in our business purchase decisions. That’s why Vanguard Energy Services focuses on LED Lighting and Energy Management. We are experts in LED Retrofit and Lighting Control Systems; hence The Vanguard Difference.
Many times products for our businesses are purchased via phone, catalog or online, and while that may be acceptable for office supplies, when it comes to lighting, it’s not. Lighting for a business is not just bulbs, it is an integral and what often can be an expensive part of overall operating costs. Lighting and energy is a line item that is easily overlooked when it comes to budget saving initiatives.
We pride ourselves on “shining the light” on the savings that can be achieved when clients work with us. Since we focus on LED Lighting each and every day, we consider ourselves leaders in our space; and as such, we know “our stuff”. This ensures that our customers make the best decisions on LED Lighting for their businesses. We don’t just sell LED Lighting out of a catalog; we implement a customized LED solution for every client and offer The Vanguard Difference!
We have worked with hundreds of businesses to assess their lighting and energy management needs and help implement solutions to reduce their energy costs and improve their environments. Since our business is energy management we are not tied to one or a few solutions or products; we are able to offer a myriad of options that will ultimately equate to the best solution for a your business. We are able to recommend and provide the very BEST products and energy management solutions for our clients that allow them to take advantage of the state rebates that are available. Many times these rebates can sometimes cover as much as 70% of the project cost. When this is coupled with the ROI associated with energy savings from LED Lighting and energy management initiatives our clients are amazed. Some are cash flow positive from day one. Yup, I said it, day one.
Each and every Vanguard client is provided with a step by step consultative approach to ensure they are provided with the best product solutions, implementation plan and cost savings. This begins with our first meeting where we listen to our client’s needs, feel their pain and discuss alternatives. We then assess their facilities and conduct a site walk through that enables us to audit the space and provide initial feedback. Our next step is to provide a detailed project analysis and proposal that answers their needs and provides the best products and cost savings/ROI for them. Once a client gives us their approval, we will work together on an implementation plan suited to their business needs and budget; this can include recommendations on electrical contractors for retrofitting/installation as well as financing. We also handle all the necessary paperwork to facilitate and streamline the entire rebate process. The end result is a satisfied client that saves money, reduces operating expenses and improves their work environment. Most importantly, when you choose Vanguard, you are choosing our experience, and the knowledge that we have a proven track record. We will be your trusted partner for all your ongoing/ future lighting and energy management needs. The relationship we have with each of our clients matter. Ask us for some references.
We are not looking for a list of your lamps or fixtures so we can quickly send back some prices and make a sale. We invest in your business by spending time with you and creating your energy reduction plan. Reducing your utility cost is our ultimate goal. So don’t be fooled, it’s not about light bulbs it all. The Vanguard difference is, it’s all about you.
Global solar PV installation for 2015 increased 34% over 2014 numbers, reaching an estimated 59 GW by the end of the year.
This, according to preliminary numbers from GTM Research published today.
“The fourth-quarter of 2015 showed that global PV demand is very much at the mercy of government support which can often be unpredictable and idiosyncratic, leading to often negative but sometimes positive outcomes,” said Mohit Anand, a senior solar analyst with GTM Research.
The definition of light by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) is limited to how it stimulates the visual system. In addition to stimulating the visual system, light incident on the retina stimulates other biological functions, most notably circadian rhythms. Circadian rhythms are bodily rhythms that, in humans, oscillate with a period close to, but slightly longer than 24 hours (h). They are generated and regulated by a biological clock located in the suprachiasmatic nuclei in the hypothalamus in the brain. Light/dark patterns incident on the retina reset the biological clock daily and are the major sychronizer of circadian rhythms to the 24 h solar day. Lighting characteristics (quantity, spectrum, timing, duration and distribution) effective to the circadian system are different than those effective to the visual system. Since circadian rhythms researchers are mainly biologists and physicians, not lighting scientists, it is common that the specification of the light stimulus used in experiments is not well characterized or correctly reported.
Improvement in work environment is closely tied with improvement in the performance of workers. Studies have demonstrated that a 3 % gain in worker performance can be obtained with better lighting. Often the gains in worker productivity are enough to offset the cost of lighting projects in less than a year. Better lighting leads to better group performance, enhances employee satisfaction, and output.
Several studies in US and Europe have demonstrated that gains in productivity can significantly alter financial projections of lighting projects. Per square foot employee costs are 8 to 15 times higher than
property costs. Investing in high quality LED lighting results in significant performance gains.
